Gone, but not forgotten

This week saw the demise of Colchester's last independent ironmongers. On Monday, 'The Famous Jack's, Est. 1946' lost it's long battle with online sellers and went into administration. This despite recently opting to trade online themselves.
Over the last 25 years, the Town has lost a total of 4 independent ironmongers with the closures of 'Farmers', now 'Saxons Estate Agents', 'Browns', now converted back to houses & 'Evans', converted to a restuarant which has since closed.

'Jacks' was the sort of place where you could buy tools that no-one else sold. You could buy a pair of wellies, a propagator & a box of 6 inch nails all under one roof. It was also the sort of place that had that 'old world' feel about it & will be sadly missed. I, and many of it's customers do hope that the owners persevere with the online side & get the business back on it's feet again.
